Midnight's Children: Elements of Magic Realism

Magic realism is  an essential feature of 20th century's English novel. The word " magic" and "realism" are controversial. They seem to unable of combining with each other. Realism refers

to the true stories of life which have happened. Magic is something which is related to fantasy and emotion. Magic realism is the combination of myth and reality. The elements which are magical are presented as true facts of life.

In Midnight's Children a lot of historical references are dominated, so using of magic realism is a great technique to make the readers a little bit interesting, because history sometimes becomes boring.

The story is started with the sentence of Saleem Sinai who born at midnight the very moment of India's independence. So, this could be a great hesitation whether he is Indian or British. As he born at the time, his life is interlinked with political, national and religious incidents of his time. The first statement of Saleem Sinai introduces us to social realism and the second is constructed with traditional English formula of fairy tales which signals to us that fantasy is ahead. To get a meaningful introduction, Saleem Sinai needs both models.

Saleem and the state of India were born at the same time 15th August, 1947 at midnight along with one thousands one children. They are presumed to have miraculous power and Saleem Sinai is the most interesting among them who is gaining and losing the ability to connect their mind telepathically. This is another element of magic realism which makes the readers laugh. He reconnects with his old friends again. Later,  he involved with the Emergency proclaimed by Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay's cleansing of Jama Masjid slum. The Emergency signals the end of the potency of Midnight Children and so does Saleem Sinai.

In his thirty-first birthday he figures out that his body begins to crack and fall apart. Death is closer to him. Padma, who is his only loving companion serves him as a nurse, often sceptical listener.

In Midnight's Children, Rushdie simply reflects the pictures of reality which he sees during the Pre and post of Indian independence.  The use of magical touch in reality makes the novel different from others. That is why, it has been able to achieve a good position in the English literature. If there was not any magical realism it could be ended up with the tag of common novels.

Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads: Major Themes

In English Literature, Wordsworth's "Preface to Lyrical Ballads" has got a rich position with the passage of time. Wordsworth revolts against "gaudiness and phraseology" of eighteenth century poets. They use such a language which is vague and unfeeling according to Wordsworth. Poetic language should not be complicated as it is made for the common men. So, language should be such which is used by men. 

Poetry should not be confined in special language, it is a matter of communication. Language of poetry and prose should not have too much differences. The poet must know how to communicate with the readers. His subject should be simple and plain so that poet easily can communicate with the readers.

The subjects of his poetry are taken from "humble and rustic life". Because, he gives more importance to feelings than actions. An ordinary element of rural life can make a serious poetry. Because, the passions, emotions and feelings find a better soil in which they can gain their maturity.

According to Wordsworth, the main aim of poetry is to give pleasure. Poetry is communication of poet's own pleasure. Poetry is a serious affair, and pleasure is not an idle amusement. The pleasure of poetry means acquiring knowledge and better understanding.

Poetry is better than science. Because, poetry deals with universal truth. A poet's pleasure is really greater than a scientist. Scientist deals with limited area of human being, but poetry is worldwide. It has no limit. It can spread its wing wherever it likes. It is the finer spirit of all knowledge and feelings. Scientist cannot ride on the every stages of human life. But, poetry has the ability to enter the most valuable parts of human life where science does not dare to enter. Poetry is thus an all-inclusive sphere.

Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings and emotion recollected in tranquility according to the Wordsworth.So, poetic process begins with the period of calm contemplation of some emotional experience of the past.  The excitement is aroused in the mind of poet gradually, so that the poet seems to the original emotion is not exactly the same, but is kindred to the original emotion experienced.

Wordsworth design his "Preface to Lyrical Ballads" very effectively. Though, it was not so important for him, but it has added an innovation to English literature.

Waiting for Godot: An Absurd Play

Samuel Becket's is the pioneer of absurdities. His masterpiece"Waiting for Godot" shows the real absurdity of life. The elements of absurdities are vividly presented here.

It is fairly definable from the word "Absurd" which refers to something that is nonsensical, worthless, meaningless, nothingness, foolish and ridiculous. So, a drama which is going to gift a  long train of absurdness(boring) can be called an Absurd drama. It is the play which is constructed loosely as well as ghostly characters. Life is reflected as  purposeless, aimless and meaningless.

In the absurd theater irrational experiences of life are presented instead of logical construction and rational ideas.

Waiting for Godot is considered as a absurd not only for its loosely constructed plot, but also for the characters who are just like puppet. The theme of the play is mysterious. The characters, presented here without any purpose of life. They are just passing their time and waiting for someone who is not to be sure to come. They just do things. The dialogues of the play are purely absurd which have no direction to the past or future. We find the characters who are babbling throughout play inadequately.  So, absurdities prevail in everywhere and it has become more acute when we see that time is changeless. But, a change is noticeable that now the tree has sprouted four or five leaves.

"Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, its awful"

The beginning, middle and the end of the play cannot be located it as a good play, but absurd.

Another reason which can be noted for its absurdity is the difference from poetic stage. Either dream and emotions or poetic language is absent here. The situation is constant and changeless enigmatic vein prevails throughout the play. No specific rules are followed in the mixture of tragic and comic elements. In the act-I it is very difficult for the characters to detect what action should be taken for their constant life. A bundle of hesitations have riddled their mind. They want to leave each other but do not dare to abandoned that place. Estragon does not want to pay heed what Vladimir is saying. But, Vladimir is saying continuously and Estragon is also cannot forsake his words. They were passing their lives with a transparent deception. Godot is mystery and remain the top quest of the readers. Their waiting is endless which seems to be absurd. The fact which is important that they are not unconscious about the absurdity and the whole world is waiting for things, which are absurd and mystery.

"Waiting for Godot" is the play which is extinction of any female character. Vladimir and Estragon who are suspective about their identity, wait for the ultimate extinction in a frustrated way. All the things are presented here as meaningless and purposeless which produce absurdness.

Absurdity get its full extent when the play has got its finishing touch. Waiting for uncertain possibility continues, human communication remains unsolved, the problem of existence remains meaningless and purposeless. The conversation between the two tramps remain in jargon really humbug and bunkum speech. So, all this things unitedly make the play absurd.

A comparative study between Gettysburg Address and Declaration of Independence

Gettysburg Address and Declaration of Independence are regarded as the most important, significance and valuable documents in the history of Independent America.
